Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I need to make an appointment for my pet?It is best to make a grooming appointment to ensure your pet is groomed on a day and time at your convenience. Although we do accept walk-ins, we regret that we might not be able to accept a walk-in appointment should our grooming schedule be filled. Therefore, we recommend booking an appointment in advance so that we can arrange and schedule a session that best suits you and your pet.
-
When should my puppy come in for its first grooming session? It’s important to have your puppy groomed as early as possible so they can get used to and learn to be relaxed with the grooming experience. We recommend they come in two weeks after their last set of vaccinations. We will not clip your puppy on their first visit as the evolution from a puppy to an adult coat is dependent on its breed. A grooming regime will be suggested to suit your puppy. During their first visit, your puppy will be introduced in a relaxed and fun way to the sights, sounds and smells of the grooming salon ensuring that future visits are stress free.
-
How long does it take to groom my pet?The time taken will depend on several factors such as the condition and length of your dog’s hair. We will be able to give you an estimate after an examination and assessment of your dog's skin and fur conditions upon your visit or pick-up. We will contact you prior to the end of the session to advise what time you should pick up your dog.
-
How much does it cost for my pet to be groomed?Pricing is based on breed, hair length, the condition of your dog’s, skin, its temperament, age, and grooming history. We will give an exact cost at your pre-grooming consultation. You can also refer the prices listed on our Grooming page as a guide for the pricing of our services.
-
Do you use drying cages? At D.O.G, we have a strict no drying cages policy. All dogs are finished by hand by our experienced groomers. We choose this for the safety and well-being of our canine clients, and while this increases the time taken for each session, we refuse to compromise by operating equipment and practices which can cause distress to your pet.
-
Can I stay and watch while you groom my pet?Although we welcome you to watch how we groom your pet with love and care, it could be unsafe for your dog during the grooming session. As your dog loves you very much, they will wiggle and move around trying to get close to you which is not safe while we are grooming. It is best to drop off your dog at their scheduled appointment time, and then come back when the session is completed. Please feel free to contact us any time during the session to find out how your dog is doing.
-
Do I need to bring anything with my pet for their grooming sessions? Before your pet arrives, we strongly recommend they have a chance to relieve themselves. They may want to have a meal beforehand, but keep in mind if your pet is nervous, they might do better with an empty stomach. Feel free to bring along any special blankets, toys, or treats that you know your dog loves so we can keep them comfortable and relaxed during grooming. Also, it you have a preference, please feel free to show us a photo of the type of haircut you would like.
-
How often should my pet be groomed? The length and type of your pet’s coat will determine how often your pet needs to be groomed. We recommend Basic Grooming once a week to maintain your pet's weekly grooming needs, such as Paw Pad Trimming, Nail Clipping and Filing, Ear Cleaning, Inner Ear Fur Removal, Sanitary Shaving, Bath and Blow-dry, and Anal Gland Expression. As for fur trimming and styling, our experienced groomers can provide you with a recommended schedule after an examination and assessment of your dog's skin and fur conditions.
-
My pet can be aggressive when being groomed, can I still bring them for grooming?Keeping a dog calm during the grooming process is just one of the requirements of a groomer. We understand that some dogs make have had a bad experience of grooming and now do not want or enjoy being groomed. This is one of the areas we specialize in, as through patience, calming handling techniques, the right equipment, and time, we are confident we can make the grooming experience enjoyable for all dogs. For those that are particularly traumatized, we recommend a grooming programme consisting of a series of shorter treatments where bath and blow-drying is undertaken at one session, nail clipping and ear cleaning at another, hair clipping at another and so on. These should be spaced at regular intervals to aid the training and rehabilitation process. Our experienced groomers would be happy to discuss a treatment plan and schedule with you if your pet requires this service. For dogs who do not have to get over a previous bad experience but generally do not like being groomed, we will book these in under a standard single session to determine their requirements. It is very rare to find an ungroomable dog, but if we come across any serious problems during a session, we will discuss them with you so we can agree on a solution together.
-
PaymentFull payment is required at the end of the grooming session. D.O.G accepts payment via cash or PayNow. All charges are payable before you leave the salon with your pet.

Health and WelfareWhen your dog is with us, its health and welfare is our main concern at all stages of the grooming process. Should we believe your dog is experiencing any fear or stress at any time, we will where possible employ alternative strategies to alleviate this. This may require extra time or sessions to overcome this problem. During grooming it is possible pre-existing conditions are noticed, which you will be informed of, in order you can seek veterinary advice. Extremely rarely accidents can happen whilst grooming, or medical issues can arise. In the unlikely event of this happening, you authorize us to seek emergency veterinary treatment.
-
Medical Problems/Senior or Sensitive PetsGrooming procedures can sometimes be stressful, especially for a senior dog or dog with health problems and can expose hidden medical problems or aggravate a current one during or after the groom. In the best interest of your pet, you will give D.O.G permission to obtain immediate veterinary treatment for your pet should it be deemed necessary by us. We will do our best to contact you first, then take your pet to our authorized Veterinarian, or to the nearest Veterinarian that is available. It is agreed that all expenses for Veterinary care will be covered by the pet’s owner. Grooming of infirm/senior/sensitive pets (puppies or small animals prone to shock) are at the owner’s risk. While we treat every pet equally and place their health and safety as our priority, we are not liable for any existing medical conditions and its aggravation which are known or unknown to the owner or us. So please, let us know of any medical conditions that your pet has.
-
AccidentsThere is always the possibility an accident could occur. Grooming equipment is sharp, even though we use extreme caution and care in all situations. Possible problems that could occur include cuts, nicks, scratches and quicking of the nails. In most cases, this can happen when a dog is wiggling or moving around. We make every effort to ensure your dog is groomed as safely as possible, but if your dog does not accept the process, it can be dangerous to continue the groom.

Neglected/Severely Matted CoatsD.O.G practices humanity before vanity and do not de-mat neglected coats. This is very different to removing small knots, tangles and isolated matted hair from the coat which can be achieved quickly without causing anxiety, stress or pain. The health and condition of a dog’s coat and skin are the responsibility of the owner (along with its physical and psychological state of health). Professional grooming plays an important role in the commitment undertaken when choosing any breed of dog. This level of commitment is evident in the condition of the coat due to effective home grooming and temperament due to socialization and training. Dogs with severely matted coats need extra attention. Mats in a dog’s coat grow tight, and can strangle the dog’s skin, or eventually tear it open. D.O.G will not cause serious or undue stress to your dog by de-matting severely matted coats. Mats can be very difficult to remove and may require the pet to be shaved. When necessary, removing a heavily matted coat includes risks of nicks, cuts, irritations, or abrasions due to warts, moles or skin folds trapped in the mats. Heavy matting can also trap moisture and urine near the dog’s skin allowing mold, fungus or bacteria to grow, causing skin irritations that existed prior to the grooming process. Torn skin from mats can even harbour maggots. After effects of mat removal procedures can include itchiness, skin redness, self-inflicted irritations or abrasions and failure of the hair to regrow. Shaved dogs are also prone to sunburn and should either have sunscreen applied daily or should be kept out of the sun until the hair grows sufficiently to protect the skin. In some cases, dogs may also exhibit brief behavioural changes. Prevention is the best defense against matting by scheduling regular grooming appointments. If your dog needs to be shaved to remove matting, you agree to this procedure, and any risk and any additional charges that will be commensurate to the additional work required. On some breeds, the coat may not grow back in the same manner. As much as care is taken during the grooming process, and we will provide you with advice on after grooming care, we are not responsible for any issues which may arise because of neglected coats. Should a dog be presented with a matted or neglected coat, if our opinion is that it will be kinder to shave the coat back completely, we will inform you about our professional decision. This incurs extra charges due to time and extra wear and tear on equipment.

Fleas and TicksIf fleas and ticks are discovered during the grooming, for the safety of other customers’ pets, we regret that we will not continue with the grooming with the session charges still fully payable. D.O.G strives to be a flea/tick-free salon. If your dog has a flea or tick infestation, we will ask that you reschedule your grooming appointment once the flea or tick problem is under control. Dogs with a flea or tick infestation carry a risk of anaemia, infections, tapeworms and other health problems. We recommend that you contact your veterinarian for advice on the best treatment for your situation. A topical monthly flea preventative may be the most effective choice. Treating all pets in the family, as well as treating your home will help in keeping fleas and ticks under control for the long term.
-
Aggressive/Dangerous/Poorly Socialized DogsOwners must inform us if your dog bites, has bitten, or is aggressive to people, other pets or specific grooming procedures. We reserve the right to refuse or stop services of your dog at any time before or during the grooming process and/or charge an Aggressive Dog Fee commensurate to the additional handling required to complete the groom in addition to the regular grooming charge. We reserve the right to refuse to groom any dog if we believe it may cause injury to itself or any members of staff. If a dog exhibits aggression or behaviour we have not been informed of prior to the groom, the session will be stopped immediately, and the full fee incurred. If your dog should bite, the owner agrees to be responsible for all related medical bills, recovery costs, loss of income and equipment damage.
-
Staff ProtectionOur staff is our most important asset, and their safety is just as important. Pets which are aggressive must muzzled, or in rare instances rejected, if its aggression is unmanageable. We also reserve the right to protect our staff from verbal and physical abuses. If you do have feedback, please inform us so that we can correct and serve you better. By using our services you agree to hold D.O.G, it’s owners, employees, and directors harmless from any damage, loss, or claim arising from any condition of the undersigned dog, either known or unknown to us. It is also further understood and agreed the terms of this agreement can change at any time, without notice, and will overwrite any and all prior signed contracts or releases. It is further understood this clause applies to any and all dogs groomed.

PricingAll prices assume a reasonable condition and temperament. Additional charges will apply for the extra time and products involved in grooming neglected coats, in-particular those which require clipping off due to severe matting, for dogs who are overweight or oversized for the breed, and for dogs whose temperament, behavioural issues, or health also requires more time to complete. All quoted prices assume: The dogs coat is well-maintained free from knots, mats and tangles. The dog is well behaved, shows no aggression and groomed at our recommended periods. The dog is not overweight or oversized for the breed. Whilst we are happy to work with nervous/timid dogs, these may incur extra charges due to the extra time and handling skills required. Charges will be incurred for matted coats, those that are poorly maintained, or dogs with fleas and ticks. All charges are payable before you leave the salon with your pet.

Cancellations and No-showsWe appreciate that sometimes you may need to rearrange your dog’s appointment. If this is done with more than 24 hours' notice, there will be no charge. Any failure to show or cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice (except in extreme circumstances) will result in the full fee been payable, and no further appointments been booked until the account is settled.
